![]() You don't just run, you leap and climb and hop over obstacles. Running is also a lot of fun in Sleeping Dogs. You can do light or heavy punches and kicks, counter enemy attacks, and drag bad guys kicking and screaming into walls/telephone booths/etc.Ī few of these moves result in pretty gruesome ends for your antagonists, but it sure is fun to fight. You can train and learn new moves, but even the basic set is pretty fun and engaging. ![]() Yes, you can use guns in Sleeping Dogs, but the magic of the game's combat system is in its melee, hand-to-hand fighting style. Often those favors lead to violence - and by violence I mean really in-your-face action movie violence ramped up to the nth degree. You can also gain reputation by doing favors for citizens. I suspect the Dark Side will be the easiest to follow, if only because driving over the occasional civilian is almost impossible to avoid.įinishing quests in either path will boost your skills in that area. Something as mundane as destroying public property by driving like a madman can hurt your cop score. You gain experience and level up your cop and criminal skill trees, impacting both the direction of the game and the abilities of Wei Shen. You're not a criminal, but you're not really a cop either - having to take on the persona and actions of a violent gang member, and get to know the very real people who make up the violent world of the Triad. You "level up" as you progress through Sleeping Dogs, but your actions during the game itself determine how that leveling occurs and which skills you can unlock. Indeed, the story of an undercover cop who maybe takes things a little far at times sets up one of the more interesting mechanics in the game. ![]() Wei Shen is a complicated protagonist, and the choices you make as you guide him through the gritty streets of Hong Kong make for a more gripping story than any other open-world crime drama I've played, including any GTA title. The best cinematic moments are moments you have a direct role in as a player. Indeed, the game manages to be quite cinematic without ever feeling like a movie you just happen to be playing. Though there are a number of relatively brief cut-scenes, these are well put together, from the animation to the voice-acting to the dialogue, and the pacing stays at a nice clip. The voice acting is excellent, and much of the dialogue takes place as you move about the city keeping the story going even while you're playing.
